DEAD POOL RULES: 2004-2005

What It Is: A Dead Pool is a game in which each player prepares a list of celebrities whom the player thinks are likely to die in the following year. Points are awarded for each correct person on a player’s list, and the person with the most points at the end of the game wins.

The Dead Pool will commence on September 1, 2004; celebrities who die on or before August 31, 2005 will count towards winning the Dead Pool. An entry fee of $20 will be required to enter the Dead Pool. All entry fees collected will be used as prize money. A prize for highest score will be awarded on or about September 1, 2005. If enough people participate, there may be prizes for second and third highest score as well.

Your Score: Your score is calculated as follows:

1. If a celebrity on your list dies, you will be awarded points equal to 100 minus one point for each year of the celebrity’s age. If the celebrity is 60 years old, then, his death would be worth 40 points (100 – 60 = 40). A minimum “I got it right” point total of 10 points will be awarded for any celebrity -- otherwise a celebrity over the age of 100 (Bob Hope, who is dead but was CRAZY old when he kicked) would be worth no points. Note that this makes all celebrities age 90 and over worth the same number of points. Young people are worth more.

2. Bonus: If a celebrity on your list dies and that celebrity is not on the list of any other player, you will be awarded a bonus of 20 points for that celebrity. This is in addition to the normal points awarded for the celebrity. Consider that a “unique” celebrity over the age of 90 is worth 30 points, the same as a shared celeb aged 70.

3. All scores will be calculated by members of the Dead Pool Staff, whose judgments and decisions are final and binding on all parties. We are not very smart, however, and welcome your corrections/comments.

Additional Picky Rules:

1. No player may “help” any celebrity on anyone’s list to die.

2. Deaths due to a state-imposed death sentence do not count. A celebrity otherwise under sentence of death who dies in another manner (suicide, murder) does count, however. (Saddam Hussein is executed by the U.S. = no points. He is shanked in the shower by his cellmate, Peaches = score!)

3. The player bears the burden of ensuring that the celebrities on his or her list were alive on August 31, 2004. No points will be awarded for celebrities who are already dead at that time.

4. A celebrity’s death must be confirmed. A celebrity who is “missing” (i.e. Osama bin Laden) will be considered dead only if they are reported as dead by the Associated Press, CNN or other major news outlet.

5. A celebrity is defined to be any person who is a celebrity. A person may be a celebrity for their involvement in the fields of science, business, entertainment, the arts, politics, crime or just because. See Zsa Zsa Gabor. Upon the death of a person, they will be considered a celebrity if their death is reported as news by the Associated Press, CNN or other major news outlet (obituaries in local papers do not count).

Your Entry

1. Prepare a list of 10 celebrities you think are likely to die in the period between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2005. In the past, we encouraged the selection of an 11th, “alternate” celebrity, but we aren’t doing that this year because it’s a stupid idea.

2. This list should be submitted by email to the Dead Pool Staff at dead03pool@yahoo.com by midnight, August 31, 2004.

3. Entry fees must be submitted no later than August 31. Until the entry fee is collected, the entry is not considered submitted. No points will be awarded for celebrities on your list who die before your entry fee is submitted.

Submit your entry fee to:

Carlton W. King
49 Hall St. #2
Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

Entry fee funds will be held in a non-interest bearing account. No refunds will be given.

Your Entry

1. Prepare a list of 10 celebrities you think are likely to die in the period between August 15, 2003 and August 30, 2004. You may also add an “alternate” 11th celebrity to be substituted in case one of your celebrities is actually dead or turns out not to be adequately famous. Death of an alternate will only add to your score if one of the celebrities on your list is disqualified!

2. This list should be submitted by email to the Dead Pool Staff at dead03pool@yahoo.com by midnight, August 15, 2003.
